This colourful deciduous tree is well loved for its stunning palmate foliage which starts a luscious green in spring before transforming to vibrant shades of orange, purple and red. Liquidambar styraciflua has a broad, conical growth habit making it a fantastic specimen for a large garden, and its discreet late spring blooms are followed by clusters of interesting spiky fruits. Sweet Gum will thrive in acid or neutral soils but is also handy for difficult chalky areas. Once established, this striking hardy tree is low maintenance and ideal for growing at the edge of woodland areas or as a superb stand-alone specimen.Height: 25m (80′). Spread: 12m (40′). This vibrant deciduous tree will rival any Maple in terms of foliage. Plant Liquidambar trees into any moist, fertile, well drained soil in sun or semi-shade. Although Liquidambar prefers a neutral to acid soil, it is lime-tolerant in chalky areas provided that it has sufficient depth of soil. For the best autumn colours, choose a position in full sun.
