A lavish tree peony in a rich shade of red, exuding an air of romance. The plump buds open into stunning blooms with layers of silky red petals, beautifully contrasted by golden stamens at the center. The double, dinner-plate-sized flowers reach up to 25cm and have a subtly sweet fragrance. Few shrubs can match the glamour and allure of tree peonies. Though they come with a higher price tag, their breathtaking beauty makes them true garden showpieces, sure to leave a lasting impression. Despite their striking appearance, tree peonies are easy to grow when their basic needs are met – a sheltered spot in full sun (or light shade) and fertile, well-drained soil. They also thrive in large containers. Fully hardy and generally pest- and disease-free, tree peonies require minimal maintenance and don’t need regular pruning. These resilient plants will bloom for decades, producing an abundance of lightly fragrant, dinner-plate-sized flowers each late spring or early summer. The flowers are supported by strong, upright stems and lush, deep green, divided leaves. Height: 1.2m (4ft). Spread: 90cm (3ft). Due to seasonal variations, we list the plant by pot size rather than a fixed size. Plump buds unfurl into huge blooms with multiple layers of silky, red petals and contrasting gold stamens. Grow tree peonies in full sun or a lightly shaded position that is sheltered from cold winds. They prefer a well drained, humus-rich, fertile, neutral to alkaline soil. They will grow in most soils, except waterlogged and acidic soils, provided they are improved on planting. This is best achieved by adding plenty of well rotted manure or compost to the soil prior to planting, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Plant tree peonies so that the grafted union sits about 15cm (6″) below the soil surface. Shallow planting may hinder establishment and delay flowering.
